Finding furrever homes for Space City kitties.

We love cats, and we believe that each kitty deserves a healthy life and a loving home. Unfortunately, Houston has a large stray animal population, and our traditional animal shelters are often at capacity, particularly during “kitten season” in the warmer months.

That’s why El Gato Charities was formed in 2020 to work in tandem with El Gato Coffeehouse, Houston's first and only cat cafe. El Gato Charities, a 501(c)3, was formed in July 2020 to bridge the financial gap created by COVID-19 by raising tax exempt donations. Your donations secure the future of El Gato as Houston’s cat cafe.

The collective El Gato organization is a cat cafe that fosters and facilitates adoption. We host a cozy space in which visitors pay a cover and interact with adoptable rescue cats while enjoying the stress relieving, therapeutic benefits received by both cats and people.

We foster 14-20 cats at a time, and we adopt approximately 100 cats per year. We will reach a milestone 500 adoptions in 2022!

We are dedicated to not only the benefits that people can bring to cats through vet visits, loving homes, and population management, but also to the benefits that cats bring to people through what we call “cat therapy”.

Traditional shelters can be stressful environments for rescued cats.

In our cat cottage, our feline friends are given free roam and are well-socialized. This means that their personalities can really shine through when potential adopters visit.

El Gato Charities is also dedicated to the well being of non-adoptable cats in the community through the process of trap-neuter-return, and was founded with this process in mind. We hope to establish a public-scale TNR program in the near future.
